Limited or metered connectivity in Windows 10

Posted on 18 Nov 2020 | By Michel Bergeron | Computer

A recurrent question since the arrival of Windows 10, and even before, what’s limited connectivity?

Limited connectivity is associated with your internet connection data limit with your ISP. Other types of metered connections are on cellular devices and limited by default with Windows 10. Wi-Fi or Ethernet network connections can also be limited, but these are not set by default. Certain Windows applications or functions work differently in order to limit your connectivity to save on consumption of metered connections. Such as, the automatic Windows updates. If your device is using Windows 10 version 1903 or 2004, and you have deactivated the option to meter network connections, especially for cellular data, it’s possible your device will reboot when it wakes from hibernation, or shut down.

To define a limited or metered Wi-Fi network connection:

Select Start > Settings > > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Known Networks.

Select the Wi-Fi network > Properties > select Metered connection
